The Northeast Area hosts 10 area events and six school-day events. Area events are the first qualifying event for athletes/teams to be eligible to advance to state games. School day events are held inviting Special Education students to participate and learn more about Special Olympics and how to get involved as an athlete or to create a local program at their school. Currently school day events are held in bowling, snowshoeing, track and field and a sports festival. Check out all of the Northeast Area events on the SOCO calendar by clicking here.

Special Olympics is looking for athletes, volunteers, coaches and Unified Sports Partners
Special Olympics Colorado is open to people of all ability levels. Children and adults eight years of age or older with intellectual disabilities are eligible to participate as athletes, and people without disabilities are invited to join our program as volunteers, coaches and Unified Sports partners.
New Athletes Welcome!
We are excited that you are interested in getting involved with Special Olympics Colorado. The following are a few steps to get you started:
- All athletes are required to fill out a SPECIAL OLYMPICS medical/participation form in order to participate. Click here to download and print a form. To download a form in Spanish, click here. You can return your completed form to your area manager or coach.
- Contact one or more of the local program coordinators in your area to determine which program works best with your needs and schedule. The program coordinators can tell you what sports they are offering as well as when and where practices will be held. Click here for a list of the Northeast Area program coordinators. If you don't see a coordinator in your area, contact Steve by email to start a new program.
- Attend practice and become part of a Special Olympics Team!!!
Volunteers Welcome!
Special Olympics Colorado volunteers are the backbone of our agency. Without our volunteers we would not have programs throughout our area. Volunteers can be coaches, team assistants, help at events or a unified partner (train and compete with our athletes). If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Steve Karjala, Northeast Area Manager at 720-359-3104 or by email.
