On February 7, Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) kicks off its sixth annual Polar Plunge Season. The series of five Polar Plunge events is the largest grossing fundraiser of the year for SOCO – and this year the series will be presented by Westerra Credit Union. Online registration is now open at https://www.specialolympicsco.org/give/polar-plunge/.
“Westerra Credit Union and Special Olympics Colorado align perfectly together,” explains Special Olympics Colorado President and CEO Mindy Watrous. “Both organizations are about building and strengthening community. As our official credit union, Westerra will help us reach more athletes and more schools throughout Colorado.” As a not-for-profit Denver-based credit union originally formed by teachers, Westerra is dedicated to help expand Project UNIFY® into more schools throughout Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties. Westerra is committed to helping students and their families learn strong financial skills through programs such as the Your School, Your Money financial awareness program which offers students their own debit card without the risk of overdraft fees.
“It’s a natural fit for Westerra,” said Nancy Bunte, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, “as Westerra and Special Olympics Colorado have both been serving our school districts and our local communities for many years.” Together, she explained, this new partnership will expand the unified sports teams into more schools. “It’s amazing to see athletes with and without disabilities playing on the same team—building inclusiveness and leadership skills. We want to build on that momentum as we work together to encourage others to support Special Olympics. We’re looking forward to the Special Olympics Colorado Polar Plunge Series in February as we launch our long-term partnership.”
This season’s flagship event, the ―Splash & Dash,” will be hosted in the heart of Denver at City Park. The Splash & Dash (Feb. 28) kicks off at Noon with the 5K, followed by the Polar Plunge at 1 p.m. The event includes a beer garden, live music, food vendors, and fun for all ages. Participants (21 and older) will receive a free beer.
Polar Plunge participants must raise or commit to a minimum of $75 to Special Olympics to take the Plunge ($50 for students), and Plungers will receive a long sleeve commemorative T-shirt for their participation. Great incentives are available for higher fundraising levels. Additionally, fundraising contests throughout Plunge Season give participants the opportunity to win a Freeze-E Pass (the ability to jump to the front of the Plunge line), tickets to sporting events and comedy shows, gift cards and more. The 5K run requires an additional $35 registration fee ($40 day-of registration). Use the code WESTERRA to receive a $5 discount when registering online for the 5K run.
