Tyrice Keen

Athlete of the Month

Tyrice Keen has been a Special Olympics Colorado athlete for the past 8 years. He initially got involved through a teacher in his school’s Transition Program and quickly found his passion for sports and the sense of community.

Tyrice competes in basketball, track, soccer, and flag football, with basketball being his favorite. What Tyrice enjoys most about Special Olympics is the opportunity to play the sports he loves, compete against other talented athletes, and be part of a team that feels like family. He values the bond he shares with his teammates and the unwavering support of his coaches and the broader Special Olympics community.

One of Tyrice’s favorite memories was joining the Aurora Bulldogs and meeting his new coaches, who have continually inspired him to grow as an athlete and as a person. Another unforgettable experience for him was participating in the Torch Run with law enforcement officers during the Opening Ceremonies at the State Summer Games. It was a moment of pride and unity he deeply cherishes.

Tyrice takes pride in being a leader on and off the field. He is known for his kindness, respect, and willingness to help others whenever the opportunity arises. Whether encouraging teammates during a tough game or lending a hand to those in need, Tyrice exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and community.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Tyrice enjoys working at King Soopers and participating in his day program. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and dedication to helping others make him a valued member of every team and community he’s a part of.

Congratulations, Tyrice, on being recognized as the May Athlete of the Month!

The Johnston Family

Family of the Month

The Johnston family has been involved in Special Olympics for over three years, though their journey started even earlier with the Young Athletes program at the Rise School of Denver, where Kolton first experienced the joy of inclusive sports.

They became more deeply involved through Unified sports at Brighton High School. Gary and Kolten participated in bowling, basketball, and Topgolf. Kolton also enjoyed playing bocce and flag football. These activities quickly became a fun and meaningful part of their family life.

One of their favorite Special Olympics memories was when Brighton High School visited Denver East for the Nuggets Takeover last year. The basketball game was unforgettable. Nuggets players Christian Braun and Justin Holiday joined in, and the atmosphere was electric. The kids had a blast and every athlete truly felt like a star.

Special Olympics has had a huge impact on the Johnston family. It’s given Kolton a place to belong, compete, and grow, and it’s opened the door for him to lead and serve through the Youth Activation Committee and the Board of Directors. His brother Gary has been by his side every step of the way, both competing and serving.

Without Special Olympics, the Johnstons say they would have missed out on so many incredible experiences—cheering for one another, working hard, and sharing in the highs and lows of sports. It’s brought their family closer together, and they’re incredibly grateful for the memories they’ve made and the ones still to come.
