November 2024 Change Makers
Beck Williers
Athlete of the Month
Beck first got involved with Special Olympics Colorado in 2022 after moving to Colorado from New Jersey with his family. Seeking to establish roots and engage with the local community, he and his family were grateful to get to know Kyle Kemper, the Southeast Regional Manager, and his leadership alongside the amazing Foundations for Successful Living team. “Their Special Olympics team embodied a true sense of community, which inspired and solidified our decision to become involved—and we haven’t looked back since,” said Beck’s mother, Michele.
Beck initially started competing in bowling with Foundations for Successful Living. He then expanded to basketball and is looking forward to competing in flag football next year. His favorite part about Special Olympics Colorado is the friendships and the incredible sense of community it brings. “Of course, the best part of it all is simply having fun,” exclaimed Michele.
Beck’s favorite Special Olympics Colorado memory is making a three-pointer shot during the basketball state competition last year. It was a huge highlight and brought an unforgettable smile to his face!
In his free time, Beck is an avid gamer who loves playing Pac-Man and Injustice. A proud moment for him is having his name in lights for achieving the high score on Pac-Man in Las Vegas!
Congratulations, Beck, on being recognized as the November Athlete of the Month!
Westerra Credit Union
Community Partner of the Month
Westerra Credit Union is a proud partner of Special Olympics Colorado. This year, Westerra is entering its 10th year sponsoring Special Olympics Colorado’s annual Polar Plunge Series. Polar Plunge is a cold-weather fundraiser that provides critical funding for nearly 21,000 Special Olympics Colorado athletes. This is an enterprise event for Westerra Cares, Westerra’s award-winning community engagement program that supports community basics, financial literacy and education across Denver Metro communities.
To recognize this milestone, Westerra has launched the initiative $10K for 10 Athletes, which contributes a total of $10,000 to 10 athletes who participate in Special Olympics’ transformative Athlete Leadership University (ALU) program.
“Our longstanding support of Special Olympics Colorado has become a cherished tradition at Westerra. It exemplifies our commitment to building a more inclusive and empowered community through the positive impact of unified sports,” said Kristina Shaw, Vice-President of Corporate Communications at Westerra Credit Union. “Our new initiative supports the ALU program as we applaud its focus on education, leadership training, and creating real-world experiences for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
We are excited to recognize Westerra Credit Union as the November Community Partner of the Month!
