September 2025 Change Makers
Matthew Steele
Athlete of the Month
Matthew has been proudly participating in Special Olympics Colorado for about two years since moving from Sterling. He first got involved after his family discovered opportunities in the Loveland recreation guide, and he’s been active ever since.
He’s competed in basketball, bowling, soccer, and softball, but bowling is his clear favorite. “It’s deceptively simple,” he says. For Matthew, one of the best parts of competing is the outstanding sportsmanship he experiences at Special Olympics, which stands out compared to other leagues he’s played in.
Outside of sports, Matthew has a wide range of hobbies. He’s recently been perfecting his sourdough bread and enjoys researching the best tips and tricks for the perfect starters. He also enjoys playing the violin and performing in a band, and when the weather’s right, you’ll likely find him out riding his bike.
This year, Matthew was also the lucky winner of the Unified Raffle and is now the proud owner of a brand-new Ford F-150!
We are excited to recognize Matthew as our September Athlete of the Month. Congratulations, Matthew!
Cindy Broin
Coach of the Month
For decades, Cindy Broin dedicated her time and heart to building opportunities for athletes with disabilities. As the mother of a son with a disability, Cindy understood the value of community, competition, and joy—and she made sure others could experience it too.
When a fellow mom who had started a small bowling team stepped down, Cindy stepped in, keeping the league alive and thriving for years to come. She ran the team year-round, while also ensuring that athletes had the chance to connect with Special Olympics Colorado through Regional and State tournaments. Cindy saw how much pride and excitement those competitions brought. She often shared how her son Nathan could hardly sleep the night before tournaments because he was so eager to compete.
Thanks to Cindy’s leadership, countless athletes and families not only found a team, but a community. Even after her passing, her legacy continues—this incredible group of moms, dads, volunteers, and athletes remains a strong, supportive family, keeping Cindy’s vision alive more than 30 years after it first began.
While Cindy is very missed, her spirit lives on with her team and the lives she touched. We are honored to recognize Cindy as our September Coach of the Month.
