Magic at the 2025 State Winter Games

Magic at the 2025 State Winter Games

This past weekend, March 1-2, the slopes of Copper Mountain were alive with energy, excitement, and unforgettable moments as we celebrated the 2025 State Winter Games. With two perfect bluebird days—clear skies and radiant sunshine—it was the best weather we’ve had in years, adding an extra layer of magic to an already incredible event.

A heartfelt thank you to Copper Mountain, our generous Host Sponsor, for welcoming us once again. For more than 30 years, Copper Mountain has been the home of the State Winter Games, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their continued support.

The weekend was packed with action—217 athletes and 25 Unified partners showcased their skills and sportsmanship in alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe events. None of this would have been possible without the support of the 200 volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was perfect — from helping athletes at the starting line to celebrating with them as they received their medals.

The Opening Ceremonies were a true highlight, kicking off the games in spectacular fashion. Special Olympics Colorado athlete Joey Franken took part in the traditional ski down, followed by an exciting cauldron lighting by Sullivan Lang (Northeast Region athlete), Eric Therkildsen (Denver Region athlete) and Peter Falia (Western Region athlete). To top it all off, once the cauldron was lit, a beautiful fireworks display that lit up the mountain sky. It was a celebration of not just sport, but the incredible spirit of inclusion and determination that defines Special Olympics.

We were also thrilled to host a successful Strong Minds Screening, where 85 athletes participated and learned tips and tricks for boosting their mental health and coping skills. It was a great reminder that wellness is about more than just physical strength—it’s about taking care of your mind, too.

As the competition unfolded, the slopes buzzed with enthusiasm. Smiles, high-fives, and moments of pure joy were everywhere. Whether it was an athlete crossing the finish line, a coach offering words of encouragement, a volunteer lending a helping hand, or even Freddie the Yeti making new friends, the 2025 State Winter Games were filled with heartwarming memories that we’ll cherish for years to come.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without our amazing sponsors. Your support is truly appreciated!
