Position Summary:
Special Olympics Colorado is seeking an individual to oversee the implementation of Unified Champion Schools (UCS) within Denver Region ranging from preschool through college. The Denver Region includes the following districts: Aurora Public Schools, Bennett, Byers 32J, Centennial, Cherry Creek, Deer Trail, Denver Public Schools, Douglas County, JeffCo, Littleton, Sheridan, as well as the region’s charter and private schools. This position will spend most of their time building relationships with districts and schools (new and current) within the region and partnering with schools to provide resources and support needed to implement Unified Champion Schools strategies and initiatives including but not limited to, Unified Sports, Red Shirt Rookies, Youth Leadership, Whole School Engagement, and Health. A key area of focus with this position also be to provide resources and support needed to successfully help students transition from participation in Special Olympics through their school into continuing participation through Special Olympics Colorado community programs.
The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program is aimed at promoting social inclusion through intentionally planned and implemented activities affecting systems-wide change. With sports as the foundation, the four-component model offers a unique combination of effective activities that equip young people with tools and training to create sports, classroom and school climates of acceptance. These are school climates where students with disabilities feel welcome and are routinely included in, and feel a part of, all activities, opportunities and functions.
Reports to: Senior Director, Unified Champion Schools
Position Responsibilities:
• Conduct ongoing monitoring of UCS progress against established goals
• Design processes and protocols to track and measure levels of outreach and successful implementation of all components in UCS sites
• Track and measure communications to local schools, district offices, and community organizations
• Employ existing tools to understand levels of UCS success; report regularly to Program team
• Meet annual goals tied to the recruitment and development of partnerships with schools to implement UCS programs and social inclusion activities throughout the Denver Region
• Serve as a resource to ensure all Denver Region schools are following all SOCO policies and procedures to develop Unified Sports programs, Youth Leadership programs, health programing, and Whole School Engagement events as needed
• Recruit and serve as the initial point of contact and secure schools / school District MOU’s for the Denver Region
• Ability to identify, train, and support educators to serve as Liaisons within schools
• Work in conjunction with SOCO’s Volunteer Manager to implement SOCO’s Coaches Education Certification Program within all Unified Champion Schools in the Denver Region
• Work in conjunction with other UCS Staff to lead and run school day Unified Sports Events, assist with annual Youth Summit, Camp Shriver, and End of Year Appreciation event
• Collaborate with the Denver Regional Manager to implement Denver Regional Unified School events
• Represent SOCO to the public by speaking to service clubs and other community groups when needed
• Maintain oversight of UCS budget related to Denver Region
• Research and develop revenue streams to support Unified Schools initiatives within the Denver Region
Position Requirements:
• Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision and values of Special Olympics Colorado
• Education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in related field
• Effective interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated Program Development and implementation experience
• Demonstrated organization and planning skills
• Demonstrate clear knowledge of Unified Sports, Youth Sports and Social Inclusion
• Demonstrate knowledge of State Educational objectives, as well as Educational Systems and school districts
• Demonstrate knowledge of Training for Coaches and Educators
• Strong self-motivation and the ability to work independently
• Support other departments contributing to team spirit and sharing of responsibilities
• Sense of humor
• Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed
• Ability to travel independently throughout the state
• Ability to operate a computer for extended periods
• Applicants will undergo a background check after conditional employment offer
• Demonstrated success in working effectively with individuals from diverse groups, including age, race, ethnicity, identity, ability levels, and backgrounds; Applicants fluent in Spanish will be prioritized
• All other duties as assigned
