Position Summary:
The Volunteer and Coach Development Coordinator is responsible for assisting with volunteer and coach recruitment, development, education, retention and recognition as it relates to the mission of Special Olympics Colorado. They will help ensure that Special Olympics Colorado has a robust and committed group of volunteers for events and programming and athletes have opportunities to participate in sports programs with certified volunteer coaches who are well-trained and adequately supported.
Reports to: Senior Manager of Volunteers and Coach Development
Position Responsibilities:
Volunteer and Coach Support:
• Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, and training logistics for volunteers and coaches across all Special Olympics Colorado programs.
• Coordinate volunteer and coach orientations, and help ensure accurate tracking of training records, certifications, and compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with the Senior Manager to develop clear, sport-specific volunteer role descriptions and quick-reference “cheat sheets” for each sport season, helping volunteers better understand expectations and responsibilities before events.
• Maintain consistent communication with volunteers to share upcoming opportunities, role details, and program updates.
• Support the upkeep and accuracy of volunteer and coach resources on the SOCO website, ensuring tools and information remain current and accessible.
• Collect and analyze feedback from coaches and volunteers to inform continuous improvement.
Young Athletes/Youth Team Support:
• Collaborate with Young Athletes (YA) Staff and the Regional Services Team to develop, update, and distribute engaging coaching guides, lesson plans, and training resources that align with best practices in early childhood/youth development.
• Partner with the Senior Manager to ensure all program content reflects current research and effective strategies for fostering physical, cognitive, and social growth in Young Athletes.
• Collaborate with YA Staff to lead and support training workshops for Young Athletes coaches, volunteers, and caregivers to build program knowledge and strengthen quality and delivery models.
• Create and provide coaches training materials offering guidance on how to support and facilitate a smooth transition from developmental Young Athletes programming into intro to competition Junior Athletes programming.
Database and Administrative:
• Enter and track volunteer hours, background checks, and certifications in the volunteer management system.
• Help generate reports on volunteer engagement and coach development as requested.
• Promptly respond to volunteer inquiries and provide excellent customer service.
Event and Engagement:
• Support onsite logistics for trainings, events, and competitions, especially related to youth programming as needed.
• Assist with recognition efforts for volunteers and coaches, including award nominations and appreciation campaigns.
Position Requirements:
• You believe in spreading joy and are dedicated to the mission of Special Olympics and have a thirst to be at the heart of social change
• Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience in volunteer management, youth development, sports management, or related fields.
• Experience working with young children or in early childhood education is a plus
• Self-motivated, resourceful, resilient and flexible
• Excellent in-person and telephone communication skills
• Have a drive for results and are a self-starter committed to the greater good
• Exceptional team player with a great work ethic
• Have excellent organization, time management skills and attention to detail
• Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Comfortable learning new database tools
• Support other departments contributing to team spirit and sharing of responsibilities
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus
• Sense of humor
• Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed, travel independently throughout the state, and lift and carry 30 lbs., and the ability to operate a computer for extended periods
• All other duties as assigned
Additional Requirements:
Applicants will undergo a background check after conditional employment offer. Applicants must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license, (or willingness to obtain one within a month of employment) with a driving record that allows employees to be covered by agency auto insurance and drive agency vehicles (must be at least 21 years old) with at least 2 years of driving experience. Applicants must also have access to a personal vehicle to travel throughout the state. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
