June 2022 Change Makers
Athlete of the Month
Christopher has been involved with Special Olympics Colorado since 2004 and has competed in basketball and swimming. He first got involved through Heritage High School Unified basketball during his freshman year.
Through Special Olympics Colorado, he enjoys meeting new people and competing alongside his friends. He also enjoys the challenge of competition. “Special Olympics makes me feel included because each sport I play(ed), I have a choice in what position I play and what events I take part in,” said Christopher. “No matter how I place in competitions, I always have friends and family tell me how good I do.”
When he’s not competing, Christopher enjoys hanging out with family and friends. He also enjoys working with his students at the elementary school where he works and attending classes at MSU Denver, as well as being with his dog Piper.
Congratulations on being recognized as our June Athlete of the Month, Christopher!
Coach of the Month
Austin began coaching for Special Olympics Colorado in 2019 and has been the head coach for the Cherry Creek snowshoe and track and field teams for the past 2 years. Austin also enjoys assistant coaching basketball and softball when he is able.
He decided to get involved because his sister, Alyson, is an athlete. Austin wanted to encourage her to participate and try new sports, as well as be part of her team.
Austin’s favorite memory with Special Olympics Colorado was not on the field, but rather on the sidelines. “I had a passionate debate with several track athletes about the best pizza toppings (consensus pepperoni), and where to get the best pizza (no consensus),” said Austin. “But I learned 2-3 new pizza places I have to try!”
Overall Austin enjoys coaching because he believes the athletes are amazing and inspiring. “Every week I learn something new from them,” he mentioned.
Congratulations, Austin, on being recognized as the June Coach of the Month!
