Inclusion Report: November 2020 Change Makers

Avalee Steinbach
Athlete of the Month

Avalee has been competing for Special Olympics Colorado for about five years now. When she became old enough to compete, her mom, Ashley, started a team for her and her friends. Their team name? The Cool CATS (Children of All Types Succeeding)!  Avalee now competes in Bowling and Cycling with the Cool CATS.

Avalee’s favorite thing about Special Olympics Colorado is making friends! She loves the opportunity to see other kids and have fun. She loves her adaptive bike, which has given her freedom, endurance, and strength. Her favorite memory of Special Olympics was crossing her very first finish line on her bike completely by herself, earning her a gold medal during the State Summer Games three years ago!

In her free time, Avalee loves to cruise on her bike, work on puzzles, and love on her little sister.

Congratulations, Avalee on being recognized as our November Athlete of the Month!

Theo Gregory
Coach of the Month

Theo has been coaching the Eisenhower Falcons Golf Team for three years. He originally got involved through his boss, Steve Wallace. Steve asked him to help out with the team but after the first practice, he was hooked. ” One of the best choices I have ever made in my life,” Theo exclaimed. “I knew I wanted to help out as many athletes as we could support in our program.”

Theo’s favorite memory coaching is watching all of his athletes compete at Regionals. He explained it was an eye-opener to the amount of support and love Special Olympics Colorado has for the athletes, partners, parents, and coaches.  He said everyone had a smile on their face and the encouragement between the athletes and their caddies was amazing!

“The interactions at practice always brightens my day,” Theo said when asked about what he loves about coaching. “I enjoy the smiles, laughter, and the positive environment at each practice as well as learning about what’s new with all of my athletes.” He said there is nothing better than witnessing an athlete hit a great shot, make a long putt, or even chip-in. “Creating a moment or memory that we can all hold on to forever!”

Thank you for all you do, Theo! Congratulations on being recognized as our November Coach of the Month!
