Inclusion Report: October 2020 Change Makers
Joe Carta
Athlete of the Month
Joe has been involved with Special Olympics Colorado for three years. He originally got involved through Starpoint in Canyon City. Since getting started, Joe has competed in basketball, bowling and flag football.
Joe has gained many friendships and a much more active lifestyle thanks to Special Olympics Colorado, while always having an excuse to get out of the house!
When Joe isn’t on the playing field, he enjoys going for walks and playing his electric guitar.
“From the moment I met Joe he showed a love for the community and his teammates,” says Southeast Regional Manager, Tasha Noble. “Joe was so thrilled just to be out and about with his team.”
Tasha says Joe continuously cheers on his fellow athletes during practice and gives them words of encouragement, even when welcoming a brand new member of the team. “Joe exemplifies the true meaning of a Special Olympics Athlete,” says Tasha.
Congratulations, Joe, on being recognized as our October Athlete of the Month!
The Hoover Family
Family of the Month
The Hoover Family kicked off their Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) journey playing soccer with the Legendary Golden Cheetahs in Spring 2019! It started with Jacob and Bodhi tearing down the soccer pitch and evolved into the boys stretching both their bodies and their minds. They have learned about the importance of being adaptable to change, listening and teamwork! “With this team, they had so much fun practicing the fundamentals of soccer, and then basketball,” said Kristin Hoover. “The coaches are so incredibly positive and patient!”
The Hoovers’ favorite thing about Young Athletes (YA) is watching their kids be both competitive and collaborative. They love the feisty competitive spirit that pushes Jacob And Bodhi to work hard, while also cherishing the collaborative team spirit that shows their heart.
The Hoover Family is involved in Special Olympics Colorado every way possible. From attending virtual zoom sessions to signing up for fundraising events, to spreading the word about Young Athletes to other families, they are always looking out for others while spreading the good word of SOCO and YA.
Thank you for all you do and congratulations on being recognized as our October Family of the Month!
